Take you ever arranged to meet someone for a business meeting that yous only knew what they looked like based on their headshot used on LinkedIn or their website? And then you show upwardly at the java shop and can't pick the person out of the customers already there because their headshot was taken several years ago and they don't quite look the aforementioned?
It makes for an awkward get-go to an in-person meeting!
Why information technology is Piece of cake for a Headshot to Exit of Date
It is easy to let happen. I hateful, I still remember I look like the Jeffrey I was 5 years ago! But the reality is, I don't. My hair is a little thinner (and maybe a bit more than gray) and even my face has inverse a bit with weight changes (in either management - a little thinner or a niggling heavier). And of course, now I wear glasses most of the time as well!
If I however used a headshot from five years ago it would be confusing for clients (or at networking events) when I meet someone. Sure in that location is some resemblance, merely that hint of doubt is at that place for the person you lot are meeting.
Let your headshot do the heavy lifting and start your first in-person meetings out confidently and on the right foot!
How Often Should I Update my Headshot?
There are of course varying opinions on this - but when I have this conversation with my clients I advise that if your headshot is more than two years onetime - it is time to update information technology. I do take a few exceptions to that (which I annotate on further below).
For most people, if you proceed your headshot within the two-year timeframe it will make a pretty accurate representation of what y'all await like today.
In that location will be subtle changes in your appearance, merely typically nil and then significant to exist putting you lot in bad-mannered conversations of "you look zippo like I idea y'all would!"
Keeping within this two-year mark also shows a caste of professionalism that you lot accept your branding seriously. This helps convey attention to detail and a certain seriousness to your business and how you stand for yourself.
What Virtually Those Exceptions?
There are things that should make y'all consider updating your headshot before that 2-year mark if they happen. Anything that makes a dramatic change to your twenty-four hours-to-day appearance should exist something that prompts you to update your headshot.
Here'south a few things that should accept you scheduling a session for a headshot update.
- Starting to regularly wear glasses when you hadn't before.
- Switching from regularly wearing spectacles to regularly wearing contacts
- Drastic hairstyle changes (long hair to brusk, extreme hair color changes, etc)
- Significant weight changes (whether it be COVID-weight or a sudden focus on physical fitness))
- For me, changes in facial hair - either going from none to some or vice versa.
Any of those types of changes should signal the fourth dimension it is time to update your professional headshot.
Is it Time to Update YOUR Headshot?
These are the conversations I have with my clients for helping them determine when to update their headshot. I hope you have constitute this helpful and hither'due south to avoiding awkward in-person encounters due to out-of-date headshots!
